World Wide Web founder Tim Berners-Lee interacts with industry leaders, faculty and students at SSN College of Engineering, Chennai

Chennai, May 18, 2018 – SSN College of Engineering today hosted an interactive talk by Sir Tim Berners-Lee, the founder of the World Wide Web. He spoke about his remarkable journey of developing the web and discussed its current standing and future development with industry leaders, academicians and students.Mrs Kala Vijayakumar, President SSN; Mr Anant Krishnan, Chief Technology Officer of Tata Consultancy Services; Dr S Salivahanan, Principal, SSN College of Engineering, Prof. B Srinivasan along with senior representatives from the Chennai IT Industry, were few dignitaries who attended the event.

Currently a professor of Computer Science at Oxford University, Sir Tim Berners-Lee implemented the first successful communication between hypertext transfer protocol (HTTP) server and client in the year 1989. He is the Director of the Worldwide Web Foundation which oversees the continued development of the web. He is also the Founding Chair at the MIT Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL).

Speaking on the occasion Mrs Kala Vijayakumar, President, SSN said, “It is hard to imagine a world without the World Wide Web. Without it, we would still know how to read the maps and have to call our friends over to show off our vacation pictures. The WWW has led to easy accessibility of knowledge and thus played a great role in the rise of SSN as among the best engineering colleges in the country. Globalization has been possible due to WWW. The world has a lot to be thankful for Sir Tim Berners-Lee”

During his talk, Sir Tim Berners-Lee stressed that adecade ago 10% of the people were on the web and today over 50% of the people are on it. He also shared his concern about the importance of bridging the digital divide for the world to progress. He revealed that he had designed WWW to be a decentralized entity, however, over the last few years it has moved to being centralized. Through his World Wide Web Foundation, he is working on initiatives to decentralize the World Wide Web.

SSN has been at the forefront of imparting knowledge and facilitating interactions with renowned speakers for benefiting academia as well as the industry in Chennai. This event was organized as an endeavor to expand the horizons of its stakeholders.
