Apollo Proton Cancer Centre (APCC):
Apollo Hospitals Enterprise Ltd. will launch the first proton therapy centre in South-East Asia in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. This launch will put India on the global map for the best and latest in cancer treatment, as only the 16th country in the world to offer Proton therapy. The Apollo Proton Cancer Centre (APCC) will cater to cancer patients from across the world and will give cancer patients access to Proton therapy, a specialised form of radiotherapy that is extremely powerful in destroying cancer cells and yet accurate in limiting the dose to the surrounding tissues. The 150 bed integrated cancer care centre will provide world-class 360ocomprehensive cancer care. The APCC has received the approval of the Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB).
Proton therapy is effective against many kinds of cancers, but is particularly effective in challenging cancer sites including tumours affecting the eye and brain, tumours close to the brain stem, spinal cord or other vital organs, head and neck cancers, deep seated abdominal and pelvic cancers, recurrent cancers and paediatric cancers where children and young adults are at a particular risk of lasting damage to organs that are still growing. The treatment team regulates the energy of the protons and using advanced treatment planning system targets the tumour at the precise site of the cancer, thereby resulting in minimal damage to the surrounding healthy tissues and reduced side effects. Proton therapy also helps in situations where treatment options are limited or conventional radiotherapy presents an unacceptable risk to the patient.
The APCC will offer patients advanced multi-room proton therapy with cutting-edge pencil-beam scanning technology that provides the highest degree of precision. The clinical advantages of proton therapy as compared to conventional radiation therapy are many, with nearly 200,000 patients successfully treated worldwide. The advanced proton therapy at APCC is powered by the Proteus®Plus system that has the latest advanced Image-Guided Intensity ModuIated Proton Therapy (IMPT). This advanced system allows radiation oncologists to accurately target complex tumours, shaping the dose as well as adjusting depth and intensity of the proton beam to the target tumour’s contours, while sparing surrounding healthy tissue which is critical when the tumours are adjacent to vital organs. The performance matches that of the currently most powerful proton centres worldwide.
The APCC has a 150 beds inpatient facility providing personalized cancer care with 3 state- of-the-art Proton Therapy rooms, advanced radiation oncology centre with 2 linear accelerators, Medical oncology and immunotherapy facility, high-end day care chemo wards and 5 Modular Digital MRI integrated OT . A high-end diagnostic imaging centre will provide Genomic Profiling for Cancers including DNA sequencing and Digital Pathology services.
Patient centric Cancer Management Teams with organ specific Tumour Boards made up of specialists who straddle diverse disciplines like surgery, radiation and medical oncology, radiology, pathology, rehabilitation and several others, are fortified by world-class support staff. A customized rehabilitation program helps to restore physical function, cognitive ability and improve quality of life.
