Various health indicators and agencies have been observing an upward trend in the incidence of cancers among children in India. Cancer is the 9th common cause of death among children between 5 and 14 years and approximately 45000 children are diagnosed with cancer annually in our country. As it is in the global scenario, leukaemia and lymphoma are the most prevalent forms of pediatric cancers in India too. With a booming population that will surpass that of China by 2024, drastic steps need to be taken to contain this Non Communicable Disease, especially among children, as they would constitute a major portion of the population.

Speaking on the launch Senior Medical Oncologist, Prof Dr S Subramanian, Chairman and Managing Director, VS Group of Hospitals said “This unit is one of the first dedicated centers in India exclusively for pediatric cancer care set up with the mission to provide personalized care for children who suffer from various forms of cancers. A comprehensive team of Pediatric Oncologists, Pediatric Surgeons and Radiation Oncologists provide round the clock care for the children. It is noteworthy that this centre will function in collaboration with International experts from the London Pediatric Hemato-Oncology Society (LPHOS)”.
“There has been a substantial rise in the incidence of cancer among young children in India. However it is reassuring that most forms of childhood cancers are completely curable since a child’s body responds more positively to the treatment than an adult’s would. Early detection is again the key here. This centre will offer full-fledged Pediatric ICU Care and it is equipped with high-end diagnostic and therapeutic medical equipment. In fact we have setup a dedicated blood bank to ensure timely availability of quality specialized blood components.” said Dr Aruna Rajendran, Consultant Pediatric Hemato Oncologist and Bone Marrow Transplant Physician.
Dr Selva Annamalai, Pediatric Intensive Care Specialist, Harley Street Clinic, London, UK noted,” In the world of collaborative healthcare, it is imperative that we utilize the vast experience of the pediatric specialists available in the United Kingdom to work in association with our team to not only collaborate clinically but provide continuous training to our doctors and healthcare professionals. In fact this collaboration along with our tie-up with Dr. Lawrence Faulkner (Cure to Children Foundation) has already helped in significantly improving our treatment outcomes for the ten Bone Marrow Transplants done so far.
