Chennai, August, 2019: Celebrating the doctor-patient relationship that has long been revered as the most sacred, a group of illustrious and renowned doctors from across India and abroad haveauthored the first ever book on this divine relationshiptitled ‘Dear People, with Love and Care, Your Doctors’. The book is also unique in publishing the first Manifesto of Doctor and Patient Rightsin Indiaelaborating the rights and responsibilities of doctors as well as patients.
The book, published by Bloomsbury with a foreword from His Holiness, the Dalai Lamawas released by Dr. V Mohan, Chairman and Chief of Diabetology, Dr Mohan’s Diabetes Specialities Centreand first presented to Dr.R.M. Anjana, Joint Managing Director, Dr. Mohan’s Diabetes Specialities Centre.
Speaking at the event, Dr. V Mohan said, “This book is one of a kind as it touches upon the doctors’ points of view and the many difficulties experienced by them. An ideal doctor is a friend, philosopher and guide to the patient’s family and not just a doctor.”
Dr. R. M. Anjana added, “Doctors play a very important role in the society. They are not just physicians or surgeons, but a well-wisher to patients and their relatives and this book beautifully captures the essence of this relationship.”
The editors of the book, Dr. Debraj Shome, eminent Facial Plastic & Cosmetic Surgeon & Co-founder and Director, Debabrata-Auro Foundation and Dr. Aparna Govil Bhaskar, Bariatric Surgeon as well asanother Co-founder and Director of Debabrata-Auro Foundation introduced the book giving a sneak peek into the world of medicine and motivating millions to maintain faith in the doctor-patient relationship.
Elaborating on the need for getting this book together, Dr Debraj Shome said, “We often hear discouraging stories of doctors being abused and hospitals vandalised. The narrative is gradually turning negative – a dismal reality for both doctors and patients. The book aims to bring back the focus on the unshakeable foundation of doctor-patient relationship through inspiring stories from the diaries of 30 doctors and 5 patients.
These are stories of triumph, empathy, positivity, loss and, sometimes, failure. Likewise, it goes one step ahead, and captures the experience of people who surround a doctor – the mother of a doctor, a surgeon’s husband and an acid attack survivor. These stories underline that a doctor too is a human being after all. Hence, these stories are a source of motivation for everyone.”
Dr. Aparna Govil Bhasker said, “Once upon a time, doctors were considered akin to God. The stethoscope was revered, and their healing touch was discussed far and wide.
This book can be an answer to what may have gone wrong in a profession which, from time immemorial, has remained one of the most respected ones and may just inspire both the doctors and the rest of the world to re-strengthen the beautiful relationship.
It is for the first time that there is a manifesto of Doctor’s rights being shared along with the Patient’s rights. This is a book on human interest stories, based on the Doctor-Patient Relationships. It’s an easy read and will be found touching and empathetic by patients and doctors alike.”
