Colombo: The South Eastern University of Sri Lanka has suspended 331 second year students, including 220 female students of the Management Faculty, on charges of alleged ragging.

The university administration has prohibited the students from entering the university premises, for refusing to comply with the university’s anti-ragging policy, reports the Colombo Page.

Vice Chancellor, Professor M.M.M. Najim said that student leaders of four out of the five faculties have agreed not to engage in ragging the freshmen, while he suspended students of the Management Faculty did not agree. He added that the parents of new students had complained about their children being ragged.

However, the Secretary of the Student Union of the South Eastern University Thilina Gamage denied about ragging the fresher’s and said it is an act of revenge to make the university a prohibited zone for the second year students without any investigation.

Following the assault on a freshman female student of Kelaniya University in May, Lankan universities have decided to take stern action against ragging and violence against students. The government has also vowed to strictly enforce the law banning the ragging in state’s higher education institutions.
