Donated heart from Vizag, saves a patient’s life in Chennai

Vizag 1Chennai 31st March’17: A middle aged man named Nawaz (name changed) a resident of Vishakapatnam, in Telengana met with a road traffic accident on 29th March 2017, and sustained severe head injuries. He was rushed to the Pinnacle Hospital at Vizag for treatment. The patient was declared ‘brain dead’ yesterday (30-03-2017) at the Pinnacle hospital. This gave a rare opportunity for him to save the lives of other patients who were suffering from end-stage organ failure.

The family members of the brain dead patient, even at the hour of extreme grief, magnanimously came forward to donate his organs, so that others can live and he too will continue to exist in this world by giving life to them. One such patient was admitted at the Gleneagles Global Health City, here in Chennai, and was awaiting a suitable heart for transplantation.

The transplant co-ordination team at Gleneagles Global Health City, Chennai, under Dr Govini Balasubramani -Senior Consultant Cardiothoracic and Heart & Lung Transplant Surgeon,  rushed to Vizag early this morning to assess the suitability of the heart for transplantation. Once the cross-match of the heart was established by the expert team, the organ was retrieved and brought to the Vishakapatman Airport by an ambulance. From there, it was airlifted using a commercial airline service (Indigo Airlines) to Chennai.

The aircraft landed safely with the heart at the Chennai International airport at 4:10 pm, and was immediately rushed out of the airport to be loaded in the ambulance that was readily waiting. The Chennai City Traffic Police took over the responsibility of safely getting the heart, to the Gleneagles Global Health City at Perumbakkam. Inspite of heavy traffic, the heart reached the hospital premises within 28 minutes. Dr Sandeep Attawar – Programme Director CTVS and his team of doctors successfully implanted the donated heart in a patient who was ailing with end-stage heart failure.
