India’s biggest conference on eye surgery opens in Chennai

Pix4-660x330The country’s biggest annual conference on eye surgery, titled “Indian Intraocular Implant and Refractive Surgery Convention 2017,”was inaugurated today by the Hon’ble Minister of Health &Family Welfare, Tamil Nadu, Dr. C Vijaya Baskar. Mr. K Vijay Kumar, IPS (Retd.), Senior Security Advisor with the Ministry of Home Affairs, Govt. of India, was the Guest of Honour.

Pix3-300x229Over 2,000 ophthalmologistsfrom around the world are participating in the two-day event held by the Intraocular Implant and Refractive Society of India (IIRSI) to showcase their skills and present the latest advancements in the field of ophthalmology, especially cataract and refractive surgery.

Addressing the distinguished gathering, Dr. C Vijaya Baskar, the Hon’ble Health Minister of Tamil Nadu, said: “It gives me immense pleasure to be a part of the IIRSI convention and see thousands of doctors gathered here from across the globe to update themselves with latest advancements in eye care.”Our late honourable Chief Minister, Selvi Jayalalitha had introduced wide range of especially CM Health Scheme through which lakhs and lakhs people are getting benefitted.

Pix-1-300x216Dr. C Vijaya Baskar added: “Cataract and refractive surgery is very important from the ‘VISION 2020 India’ point of view.Recent statistics showthat the blind population in India is expected to rise to up to 18 million by the year 2020. About 80% of blindness is due to cataract and corneal disorders, which are preventable with early treatment. The various programs initiated by the Government, NGO’s and several hospitals to eradicate preventable blindness is commendable, but more efforts are required to meet the target of Vision 2020 India.”

Pix2-300x199Prof. Amar Agarwal, Secretary General, IIRSI, said, “Every year, IIRSI is taking great strides in the field of ophthalmology by showcasing and honouring ophthalmic talent and creating a talent pool among the peers. It provides a platform to share knowledge and helps bridge the talent gap. The amount of information shared is enormous. The aim is to promote advancements in ophthalmology among the medical fraternity and make our country a sought-after destination for eyecare in the world.”

Other highlights of the event include a hands-on Wet Lab session in which participants will get to practically learn a novel surgical technique involving the implantation of IOL in an eye that lacks the lens capsule.

There is also a Film Festival to bring the essence of ophthalmic education to viewers through dozens of videos of surgeries relating to several specialties.
