L’Occitane en Provence opens shop in Chennai

DSC_0997L’Occitane en Provence, one of the world’s leading natural luxury skincare brands, forays into Chennai with the launch of its exclusive store in Phoenix Market City. L’Occitane opened doors in India in the year 2009, with its flagship store in Khan Market, New Delhi. Today L’Occitane has a presence of 13 boutiques in India across all major cities including New Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Pune and now Chennai.

DSC_1017The story of L’Occitane begins in Provence, in 1976, when the brand was created by Olivier Baussan. Drawing inspiration from Mediterranean traditions, he developed skincare products and fragrances that were natural and authentic, effective and deliciously appealing. In 1976, Oliver Baussan, having purchased a distillation still, gathered some wild rosemary and extracted its essential oil. He then used this oil to make shampoos, which he sold at the local markets. And thus, began the journey of ‘L’Occitane’.

The first L’OCCITANE store opened in 1981, in Provence. The brand went on to pursue its development, opening stores in Paris in 1992, followed by New York, Hong Kong and Tokyo from 1996. As of 2016, L’OCCITANE Group has a presence in over 90 countries, with over 2,700 stores worldwide.

In the time of the Byzantine Empire, the south of France was a region called “Occitania”. The name “L’OCCITANE” is derived from this, meaning “woman of Occitania.” L’OCCITANE symbolizes this woman, her beauty and her relationship with nature.
