A coffee table book on 300 years of English Free Masonry: Tercentenary celebrations of District Grand Lodge of Madras

a coffeeChennai. 11th August 2017: District Grand Lodge of Madras is celebrating the 300th anniversary of English Freemasonry this year. As part of the global celebration, a coffee table book on the History of English Freemasonry in South India was launched.The book has been compiled and authored by famous Historian and columnist Sriram V. The book titled ‘Brotherhood and Benevolence’will capture the long running history of Freemasonry in South India. It will be a top-of-the-line production and will find its place in important Masonic Libraries around the world including the United Grand Lodge of England. This will be an ultimate reference book on the District covering the past 300 years.

Speaking on the occasion, , R W Bro TheophilusArputharajDevagnanam,said, “The District Grand Lodge of Madras has a vibrant and robust history and has been governed by the United Grand Lodge of England.From the 1800s we Indians took freemasonry in increasing numbers and the community has been growing since then.”

In the South, eighteen Lodges opted to remain affiliated to English Freemasonry, operating under the District Grand Lodge of Madras. “The book captures the chronology of Freemasonry in South India, right from the inception, growth of the community and the works done by the District Grand Lodge of Madras,” he adds.

The District Lodge also serves the needy, indigent masons, widows of masons and also provides scholarships for students to pursue higher education. “We have

been practicing the idea of serving the needy right from the inception of this Lodge and we are proud to serve the needy , most of it which has not been

exposed much to the world. We have members who have regularly contributed to the charity and we believe more people would join our community and help in the betterment of the society,” he concluded.

During the Chennai floods in December 2015 District Grand Lodge of Madras  supported to restore the loss incurred in Homes of the Destitute, Homes for the Mentally Challenged, Cancer Hospitals  etc for a total value of Rs 49 lakhs.On the occasion of the Tercentenary Celebrations of United Grand Lodge of England  making a Charity Disbursement of Rs 10 lakhs for s a few more new cancer hospitals.
