Chennai, March 16, 2018, With Syria as the prime focus worldwide and the humanitarian crisis in this region Russian Consulate in Chennai today clarified the Country’s stand on Syria.

In a press conference jointly addressed by Mr. Sergey L. Kotov, Consul-General of the Russian Federation in Chennai, Mr. Evgeny A. Kravchenko, Deputy Consul-General of the Russian Federation in Chennai, Ms. Yulia Antonova, Vice-Consul, Consulate General of the Russian Federation in Chennai, Mr. Yury S. Belov, Vice-Consul, Press-Attache, Consulate General of the Russian Federation in Chennai, the officials clarifies Russia’s approach to resolving humanitarian crisis in Syria and peaceful settlement of the conflict in the country.

The officials clarified Russia’s stand to support reconciliation and stability in the Middle East and full elimination of the terrorist threat.  The Russian Federation is taking active measures to promote political settlement of the crisis in the Syrian Arab Republic in accordance with the UN Security Council resolutions.

With the support of the Russian Aerospace Forces the Syrian army continues its fight against Islamic state terrorists which have consolidated their hold in the Eastern Ghouta region.

Dismissing some of the media reports as politically biased, the officials of the Russian Consulate shared that falsified photo and video materials are being published in social networks and other media. Based on this misinformation, distorted data and false allegations about situation in Syria, a group of Muslim public organizations were protested in the city on 28th February and 2nd March, 2018.

The officials expressed hope that such instances will be just a one off happening and Muslims of the friendly nation of India will understand Russia’s stance and will be able to assess its reasonable contribution to the peaceful settlement of Syrian conflict and the effort taken to counter international terrorism.

However, the officials also emphasized it is vital to explain to people what these terrorist organizations are and it is of paramount importance to stress the need to carry on active anti propaganda work against ISIS, Jabhat al-Nusra, Al-Qaeda and other related terrorist and extremist groups.
