Chennai, August 2019: The advanced neurosurgery unit at Kauvery Hospital was inaugurated by Dr. C. Vijayabhaskar, Health Minister, Government of Tamil Nadu and Air Marshall Simhakutty Varthaman on Wednesday, 21stAugust 2019 in the presence of Dr. Aravindan Selvaraj, Executive director, Kauvery Hospital, Chennai, Dr. Shyam Sundar Krishnan, Senior Consultant, Brain and Spine Surgeon and Dr. Balamurali Gopalakrishnan, Senior Consultant Spine and Neurosurgeon.
Setting a new benchmark in adoption of technology in healthcare, Kauvery Hospital, a leading multi-specialty and tertiary care hospital chain, will provide comprehensive and advanced neuro and spine treatment using 3D and robotic technology. The neurosurgery department will be led by, a team of experts, Dr. Shyam Sundar Krishnan, Senior Consultant, Brain and Spine Surgeon and Dr. Balamurali Gopalakrishnan, Senior Consultant Spine and Neurosurgeon.

With the launch of advanced neurosurgical unit, Kauvery Hospital will be at the forefront for providing cutting-edge neurology treatment. The newly unveiled 3D microscope and robotic surgical device helps in
• Enhancing safety and précising
• Improved quality of outcome
• Decreased surgical time & Infection
In addition to the 3D microscope, the revolutionary neuro-navigation facility will help in effectively treating the tumour without damaging adjoining blood vessels and other tissues, in the brain and spine and high-end endoscopic removal of tumours. The neuro department will also have facilities of –

1. The Neuronavigation System
2. The Ultrasonic Aspirator System
3. The Neuro Endoscopy
4. The Stereotactic System
5. The 3D Robotic Microscope
Speaking on the occasion, Dr. C. Vijayabhaskar, Health Minister of Government of Tamil Nadu said, “This is a commendable initiative by Kauvery Hospital, Chennai to adopt advanced technology in treating brain and spine tumours. Today, technology is advanced in such a way that precision surgery is possible and that that too in the brain and spine. I am glad to know that Kauvery Hospital possess the know-how and the capability to make it accessible to the common man.”

“We are happy to have launched a high-end neurosurgery department driven by latest technology at Kauvery Hospital. This will not only enhance the quality of neuro surgeries but also add value to the healthcare sector in the country. The 3D technology and robotic microscope will help in treating brain tumours, spinal cord tumours and spinal fixation. Visual colour coding of tumours ensures a complete removal of tumour. Similarly, virtual flow in blood vessels helps in treating vascular lesions. The neuro-navigation device will help in understanding the structure and relationship of the tumour/lesion with adjoining normal tissue while operating. This device will help us deal with difficult and complex tumour locations which will help us to navigate through tumours that were once difficult or complex.”, said Dr. Shyam Sundar Krishna, Senior Consultant, Brain and Spine Surgeon, Kauvery Hospital, Chennai.

Dr. Balamurali Gopalakrishnan, Senior Consultant Spine and Neurosurgeon, Head of Advanced Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery Department, Kauvery Hospital, Chennai commented on the occasion, “In the past decade, great advances have been made that has taken accuracy of spine treatment to a new height to avoid bad outcomes. Also known as “computer-assisted, image-guidance,” navigation technology is advancing at a rapid rate, combined with minimally invasive techniques that has made spine surgery precise, safe and reproducible. Spinal navigation technology produces a virtual reality 3-D model of the patient’s spine which enables the surgeon to more accurately place spinal instrumentation, perform decompression, remove tumours and other tasks. Surgeries can even be planned ‘virtually’ on the computer before a procedure. This technology reduces the radiation exposure to patient and staff during surgery and is a precursor of Artificial Intelligence technology of the future.”

“Kauvery Hospital always strives to be abreast with the latest technologies in the healthcare sector, across the world. Advancements in technology has played a huge role in changing outcomes and delivery of healthcare. Through adoption of 3D and robotic technology, the advanced neurosurgical unit at Kauvery Hospital will provide precise and error-free treatment to our patients. We are pleased to provide speciality treatment by renowned medical experts in the field of neurosurgery, who are trained to use this 3D and robotic technology. This will pave way for Kauvery Hospital to be a preferred destination for holistic healthcare, particularly for performing neurosurgery” said Dr. Aravindan Selvaraj, Executive director, Kauvery Hospital, Chennai.
