Bengaluru, May, 21, 2018 Ahead of TCS 10K run, Fortis Hospitals, Bangalore being the medical partner conducted a three-day session on CPR to provide them basic knowledge to assist fallen runners during the run. The series of CPR session which started on 19th May will be continued on 24th & 25th May at Godrej Properties, Powered Mirchi Active Expo.
Fortis Hospitals has been the medical partner to the TCS World 10K for the last eight years. The participants of CPR workshop were certified by Fortis Hospitals as a trained lifesaver. CPR is a lifesaving technique useful in many emergencies, including a heart attack/cardiac arrest or near drowning, in which someone’s breathing or heartbeat has stopped.
Dr Kumar Swamy E, Director- Emergency Services, Fortis Hospital Bannerghatta Road, said, “CPR training is compulsory for everyone, however it is important for the participants as immediate use of this procedure will save many of the runners who are at a risk of developing cardiac arrest during a marathon or half-marathon. It is recommended for the prospective runners to go for a health check-up, and go slow initially before increasing the intensity of exercise over a period of six weeks. People without history of heart diseases might also suffer cardiac arrest during marathon as they might push themselves to run more. In case of emergencies, the co-runners would be able to provide basic CPR to save his/her life”.
As per WHO census statistics, approximately 4280 people in every lakh die each year from sudden cardiac arrests in India alone. According to estimates, more than 6-7% of these deaths can be averted if CPR is performed early enough.
