L2: EMPURAAN Movie Review by MATHIOLI RAJAA

L2 Empuraan Movie produced by Antony Perumbavoor – Gokulam Gopalan under the banner of Aashirvad Cinemas Pvt Ltd, Sree Gokulam Movies, Directed by Actor Prithviraj Sukumaran, Starring by Mohanlal, Manju Warrier, Tovino Thomas, Prithviraj Sukumaran, Pranav Mohanlal, Karthikeyaa Dev, Abhimanyu Singh, Andrea Tivadar, Jerome Flynn, Indrajith Sukumaran, Kishore & Many Others.

The film opens with a botched secret military operation in ‘Karagkosh’, a place referred to as ‘Ghost Town’ in post-war Iraq. The story then shifts to Gujarat, India in 2002, where it witnesses a communal riot. The plot revolves around Empuraan, also known as Stephen Nedumpally (Mohanlal) or Abraham Kuruvilla (Prithviraj Sukumaran), who narrate a gruesome backstory of how their families were torn apart.

The scene then shifts to Kerala, where Chief Minister Jatin Ramdas (Tovino Thomas) is at odds with his party and sister, Priyadarshini Ramdas (Manju Warrier). The Chief Minister faces several allegations of corruption and failing to uphold his late father Ramdas’s (Sachin Khedekar) values. He makes a stunning announcement, revealing a change in his politics. He boldly decides to break away from his party and form a new one, aligning himself with Baba Bajrang Dal, also known as Palraj (Vineet Kumar). This move plunges Kerala into class-based politics.

Meanwhile, Kuruvilla, also known as Stephen Nedumpally, takes on the international drug cartel, Kabooka, and the corrupt regime of Kerala Chief Minister Jatin Ramdas. His arrival changes the political landscape of Kerala. What is his personal vendetta against Palraj? What is Palraj’s connection with Saeed Masood? The film unravels these questions.

Mohanlal mesmerizes audiences with his stunning portrayal of both Stephen Nedumpally and Abraham Kuruvilla. Although he doesn’t appear until the first hour, his delayed entry electrifies the screen, and his calm yet authoritative depiction, coupled with a captivating presence, propels the film forward.

He effortlessly conveys walk, anger, disdain, sorrow – all through body language and resolute eyes. He shines in action sequences, and the rigorous effort he put into them is evident on screen.

Prithviraj Sukumaran has limited screen time, but he makes the most of it. Tovino Thomas fits well into his character. Manju Warrier, despite limited screen time, impresses with her acting, bringing a strong presence in the final segments.

Abhimanyu Singh shines as the menacing Palraj Bajrangi, and Kishore gets some opportunities as a law enforcement officer. The foreign actors and all supporting actors have handled their roles efficiently.

Deepak Dev’s music perfectly complements the stunningly visualized scenes. The background score, though adequate, was a bit loud during key moments. The action sequences are impressively choreographed. The church fight scene, Mohanlal’s grand entrance, and several moments are executed with opulence in a Hollywood style, providing a visually immersive experience.

Sujith Vaassudev’s Cinematography showcases excellence in every frame, with the camera work beautifully balancing fast-paced and smooth shots. However, the editing is very sharpness, causing merged with the film’s pacing, making it feel high and fast at times. Even well-designed scenes enlarged their impact due to excellent storytelling.

The gripping depth that made Lucifer captivating is higher in Murali Gopy’s writing style in L2: Empuraan. Director Prithviraj Sukumaran has proven his skills as a director and actor through various films. However, his third directorial venture, ‘L2: Empuraan’, success to engage on a deeper level due to multiple subplots involving international drug trafficking, religion, and political twists.

Though it’s grand in its narrative, it takes a more commercial route. Like how Lucifer ended, ‘L2: Empuraan’ concludes with a lead into Part 3. Producers Antony Perumbavoor of Aashirvad Cinemas, Gokulam Gopalan of Sree Gokulam Movies, and A. Subaskaran of Lyca Productions have prioritized grandeur, making it feel like a Hollywood production with scenes expanding across various international locations, thus succed the fort in the story.

‘L2: Empuraan’ is an emotional action film with a mix of politics and religion. Grandeur in treat though Visuals, Verbals, Technology. Especially Starcasts. It makes audiences wow.
