Kolaiseval Movie Review by MATHIOLI RAJAA

“Kolaiseval” movie produced by R.P.Bala – Kousalya Bala under the banner of RP Films, Directed by VR. Thudhivaanan Starring by KALAIYARASAN, DEEPA BALU , BALASARAVANAN, GAJARAJ, VIJAY SATHYA, AADHAV CHANDRA, AKARAN VENKAT, VIJAYALAKSHMI, JAYALAKSHMI, RAJAMANI, DHANALAKSHMI, MANJULA, KAYAL, MANIMEKALAI & Others

Kalaiyarasan and Deepa Balu live in a village in Tiruvannamalai district. Deepa, the heroine, marries her love Kalaiarasan despite her parents’ opposition. They lead a peaceful life elsewhere but return to their hometown, and Deepa’s pregnant. During this time, Kalaiarasan’s family wants to visit their family deity’s temple to fulfill a vow.

The family deity’s temple is located outside the village, in a hilly area. The other family members had left earlier. A few hours later, Deepa and Kalaiyarasan head to the temple. On the way, Deepa has a gut feeling that something ominous is about to happen, which she shares with her husband.

Kalaiyarasan reassures Deepa and takes her to the temple. There, the worst Deepa feared happens. What it is, is revealed in ‘Kolaiseval’. Deepa Balu visits her family deity with a mix of fear and anxiety, only to face an unexpected ordeal. ‘Kolaiseval’ exposes the brutal reality of a long-standing social issue, highlighting its pain and agony.

The first half of the movie is engaging, thanks in part to P.G.Muthiah’s cinematography. He creates a sense of foreboding, making us feel Deepa’s unease. The camera angles and movements effectively convey a mix of fear and intuition.

The climax exposes the beast within humans. The director tackles a disturbing issue prevalent in Tamil Nadu, especially in southern districts, presenting it as a thriller rather than propaganda.

Deepa Balu and Kalaiarasan’s love story is engaging. Deepa’s acting is impressive, especially in the climax scene, where she’ll leave you in tears. Kalaiarasan shines as a lover and caring husband. The elderly couple, Gajaraj, Bala Saravanan – everyone has given a solid performance. Vijay Sathya, Adhav Chandran, Akaran Venkat, Vijaya Lakshmi, Jayalakshmi, Rajamani, Dhanalakshmi, Manjula, Kayal, and Manimekalai portray the local folks.

Shanthan’s music and score breathe life into human emotions. The old song hinting at impending danger and the jittery BGM effectively captivate the audience, even in serene settings. The absence of background music in some scenes is a nice touch. Despite the solid production, the script’s predictability is a drawback. Still, kudos to the director for tackling a sensitive issue prevalent in parts of Tamil Nadu.

Ajay Manoj’s editing keeps the narrative engaging, focusing on love, unexpected shocks, and natural performances, making for a gripping watch despite being concise.

Director V.R. Thudhivaanan tackles a brutal social issue with realism, balancing the pain and agony with a beautifully portrayed love story that’s both aesthetic and emotional.

Director V.R. Thudhivaanan focuses on the victims’ pain, avoiding questions and solutions, effectively imprinting the trauma on viewers’ minds through skilful storytelling.

“Kolaiseval” movie is Painfull Truth. Reality of the Rural Life.
