cmrlMetro rail likely to give contract by month-end; expect work to be complete within 20 months of commencement.
Chennai metro rail is gearing to build a new underground line from Washer menpet to Korukkupet, including two stations, as part of Phase 1 extension to Wimco Nagar. The line, offering residents of north Chennai neighbourhoods access to the mass rapid transit system, is scheduled to be completed in 20 months after contracts are awarded.

The line will snake through 2km beneath densely populated northern suburbs of New Washermenpet and Korukkupet. The authorities have firmed up the alignment from Theagaraya College to Korukkupet junction, marking areas of potential impact of the work on buildings around the proposed tunnels and stations. A contractor to build the stations and tunnels will be identified by end of this month.
