Final inspection of Airport Metro line next week

cmrlMoving a step closer to inauguration of the second stretch to airport, Chennai Metro Rail has planned to have its final inspection later next week and commence operations by the end of August.

Officials of the Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) said they have invited Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety (CMRS) in the second week of July for final inspection of stations from Little Mount to Chennai airport.

“The clearance may come in early August; the inauguration is likely to happen in the last week of August or latest by the first week of September,” a Metro Rail official said.

Though the inspection is scheduled next week, most stations are still in various stages of construction. “There is a delay in construction work only in one or two stations which will be completed soon,” an official said.

Last week, the Research Design and Standards Organisation (RDSO) that inspected the Chennai Metro Rail trains in May, found them fit for operation from Little Mount to Chennai airport.

Top sources in RDSO told Faceinews that there were “no issues” with regard to operating trains in the 9 km stretch.

Rise in fares likely

When the second stretch of Chennai Metro Rail becomes operational, it will be a direct ride for commuters travelling from Koyambedu to Chennai airport.

The fares for travel in the Koyambedu to Alandur stretch ranges between Rs. 10 and Rs. 40. Sources said the maximum fare may rise to Rs. 50 when the second stretch of the facility is operational.
