“Consturction industry should comply with green norms” – Governor Dr. K. Rosaiah @ `Construction Industry Awards 2013’ function organised in the city

“Whether it is construction of houses, villas, dwelling units or industrial units, bridges or any infrastucture, the consturction industry should ensure quality, cost effectiveness and should comply with green norms. Enhancing quality and use of modern technology is imperative in any field, that too for constuction industry it is most necessary,” advised  His Excellency Dr. K. Rosaiah, Governor of Tamil Nadu, presiding over the `Construction Industry Awards 2013’ function organised recently (January 25, 2014) in the city.

 

Appreciating the role played by the industry in the development of modern infrasturcture, he said “The consturction industry accounts for 6% to 9% of the GDP of many countries. In India, construction field is scaling greater heights through several of its meritorious projects and its performance in the housing sector and the contribution of private sector in briding the gap between demand and supply in the housing sector is remarkable.”

 

DrK. Rosaiah honored the achievers in the constuction industry with certificates and mementos. Kattumana Thozil, a Tamil Monthly Magazine of Construction Industry, organised the event.

 

Mr. Sandeep Mehta, President, CREDAI (Confederation of Real Estate Developers Association of India), Chennai; Mr. S. Ayyanathan, Chairman – Southern Centre, Builders Association of India; Dr. Ravindra Gettu, Professor, IIT Madras and Chairman, Indian Concrete Institute; Mr. Rajendiran, President, Federation of All Civil Engineers Association; Mr. R. Varadarajan, MD, Repco Bank, and Mr. T. Raja Sekhar, Secretary, Chennai Timber Importers Association, were the guests of honour at the function.

 

Thirty awards in various categories such as construction technology, green buildings, affordable housing and home finance and also for upcoming young talents were given away by the Governor. The awardees were selected from various parts of the state including Chennai, Trichy, Tanjavur and Madurai. Students of civil engineering and architecture streams were given prizes for demonstrating their subject knowledge in the quiz contest held earlier.

 

The award list includes the awards to Life Insurance Corporation of India for excellence in ‘Employee Insurance’; Ruby Builders for `Affordable Housing’; Olympia Infratech Pvt Ltd for `Mega Housing’ (for its excellence for a project at Pallavaram); Lifetime Achievement Award to Mr. Shanta Kumar, Emirate Professor of IIT Madras (his notable works include Bicentennial Building College of Engineering at Anna University that was built three storeyed without beams and columns on a load bearing structure); and Mr. Ranjith Kumar (a 2013 passout student from the School of Architecture and Planning from Anna University) in `Best Student Architecture’ category and Mr. Prabaharan (Registered Class 1 Contractor for PWD) of Trichy for `Emerging Contractor in Civil Work’,        

 

A jury panel consisting of 10 domain experts adjudged the winners. Nominees to the award were selected based on their popularity among the public in their region and opinion gathered from the industry people.

 

“Two years ago we instituted the Construction Industry Award with the aim of recognizing and encouraging talents from different levels of the construction industry. Several awards are being conferred to honor talents in various areas of the construction field. But, there is nothing yet that respects the skills of construction people from lowest to top level of the industry. To fill the gap and to include everybody of the domain and related fields, we have instituted the awards across 30 categories,” said Mr. Sindhu Baskar, the editor and publisher of Kattumana Thozhil.

 

“Construction is the second largest industry next only to agriculture and involves hard work and expertise of many people. Civil structures and architecture have been reflecting the culture and heritage of any region over generations and time. In recent times Building Construction is witnessing enormous growth, thanks to the hard work put in by people of the industry and application of innovative technology and high degree of intelligence by engineering experts. Towards appreciating these various aspects, we are giving the awards,” he added.
