An 18 year old boy from UAE suffering from Familial Cardiomyopathy (a genetic life threatening heart condition) with symptoms of advanced heart failure and shock Liver (function affected due to circulation issues), underwent a heart transplant at Gleneagles Global Health City, Chennai, on the 10^th of March, 2017. The boy had already lost his twin brother to the same disease and was airlifted in an air ambulance, 20 days ago from Abu Dhabi and was stabilized at Gleneagles Global Health City, in Chennai. Given the fact that there is an extensively long domestic waiting list for organ transplants, the boy continued to be in the ICU under strict supervision with specialists considering a LVAD implant. Fortunately Gleneagles Global Health City received a call very late at night on the 9^th of March, about an organ being available in Continental Hospitals, Hyderabad (a sister concern of the hospital) that wasn’t going to be used for any domestic patient in the state of Andhra Pradesh. The call was then transferred to the organ procurement agency (TRANSTAN) Transplant Authority of Tamil Nadu & the CPT informed the hospital about the availability of a Heart. In Chennai the blood group was matched, the age was matched; many other body habitors restrictions that Gleneagles Global Health City normally imposes on themselves to make sure that the right organ goes to the right individual were all cross checked and the boy was found to be eligible.

“It was a case of extreme collaboration between both the governmental agencies and the much organised and highly skilled set of individuals within the administration at Gleneagles Global Health City and Continental Hospitals, Hyderabad, said Dr. D.C. Gouthaman, Medical Director, Gleneagles Global Health City. “A very effective tripartite kind of working arrangement was put in place within an hour. Our team in Hyderabad harvested the organ from a cadaver post which the heart was flown into the Chennai airport. From the airport we received a green corridor to reach the patient in time and our team of specialists ensured that the transplant was a success. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the government agencies involved in aiding us to ensure that this young boy can live a full life.”

The surgery took 4 hours and boy is on the road to recovery and is currently stable in the ICU. His family members were relieved and Gleneagles Global Health City is hopeful that he will make a swift recovery and get discharged from the hospital in the coming fortnight.
