Heart Transplant Recipient Completes Half-Marathon 1 Year After Surgery

Chennai, 3rd November, 2017: Mr. Rupayan Roy of Kolkata, a heart transplant survivor from Fortis Malar Hospital, has participated and successfully completed BSF Half Marathon — 2017 that was held in Kolkata on October 29, 2017. Mr. Roy, who underwent a transplant surgery last year at Fortis Malar Hospital in Chennai, took part in this 21 kilometres half-marathon, “Run For Martyrs”, which was conducted in memory of the Martyrs who laid down their lives in pursuit of securing ours.

 It was a huge accomplishment for Mr. Rupayan who was diagnosed with Heart failure in the month of May, 2016. He underwent a heart transplant surgery on 31st July 2016 at Fortis Malar Hospital which was performed by an internationally renowned Indian cardiac transplant surgeon, Dr. K R Balakrishnan, Director – Cardiac Sciences and Dr. Suresh Rao, Head of Department of Cardiac Anaesthesia and Cardiac Critical Care.

Especially, I must highlight the fact that Dr. KRB (KR Balakrishnan) inspired me to participate in this marathon. I thank him and his team for all the support and care. Now, I feel very lively and confident and look forward to participating in more such activities and events.”

 Dr. Suresh Rao, Head of Department of Cardiac Anaesthesia and Cardiac Critical Care, Fortis Malar Hospital said, “Rupayan is our first heart transplant recipient to have participated and completed half-marathon which sets an example for others. Whilst we have performed the surgery, it is his willpower that has helped him to overcome the surgery and lead a normal life again. Mr. Rupayan is an inspiration for every patient who has undergone heart transplant.”
